Your child can practice listening at home on a phone or tablet without an account of their own. There is no email address and no password. You sign the device in once, with a sign-in link or QR code, or your child types a short username and taps a four-letter letter code on a pad of Qaidah letters. The device then remembers them, so next time they just tap their name and press play.

This guide is for parents and the children they help. Teachers and school admins: see Set up the Practice center for your students.

Before you start

  • You are connected to your child in QuranPortal as their mother, father or guardian. A child can sign in only while a parent is connected, so there is always a grown-up who can help.
  • Home practice is on. Open your child, then choose Practice center under their name in the menu, in the More section. If the Home practice switch says Off, press it, then press Turn on sign-in under Signing in at home. If you don’t see Practice center, ask your child’s school.
  • The teacher has turned listening on for some work. Your child practices only assignments with listening on. If there is nothing to practice, ask the teacher.

Signing in at home shows On · 2 devices, Sign in a device with Show link, the school code alnoor, the school sign-in page with a copy button, the username bilal.rahman with Change, the letter code with Show and New code, Sign-in notices naming Khalid Rahman, and two devices, Safari on iPad and Chrome on Android, each with Sign out.
Everything you need to sign your child in, in one place.

If your child has their own QuranPortal account, they sign in with it instead, and the Practice center says so. The Home practice switch still turns their practice on and off.

Two ways to sign a device in

  • A sign-in link or QR code. Easiest when you are with your child. Nothing to type or remember. How it works.
  • Your school’s sign-in page, username and letter code. For a child signing in on their own. How it works.

Either way, the device stays signed in, so your child only does this once on each device.

  1. Press Show link

In your child’s Practice center, next to Sign in a device, press Show link. A large QR code appears, with the link underneath and a Copy link button. Your child’s teacher can also show it in class.

  2. Open it on your child’s device

Scan the QR code with the camera of your child’s phone or tablet, or copy the link and open it there. It works once, for 15 minutes. Each link signs in one device, so press Show link again for the next one.

  3. Your child presses Start practicing

The link opens a page that says Hi Bilal! with one big button, Start practicing as Bilal. Pressing it signs the device in and opens their practice.

A phone showing a round B avatar, the words Hi Bilal!, Tap the button to start practicing on this device. It will remember you next time, and a Start practicing as Bilal button.
Opening the link doesn’t sign in on its own. Your child presses the button.

If the link has run out or was already used, your child sees Ask your teacher or a parent for a new practice link. Press Show link again for a fresh one, or press Sign in with my letters instead.

Way 2: your school’s sign-in page, username and letter code

You’ll find all three under Signing in at home in your child’s Practice center, or your school may share them with you:

  • School sign-in page: your school’s own address, such as quranportal.io/learn/alnoor. The button next to it copies it.
  • Username: your child’s first and last name, such as bilal.rahman. Press Change to pick one your child will remember.
  • Letter code: four Arabic letters, in order. Press Show to see them. Each letter has a small picture as a hint, such as a moon 🌙 for ق or a camel 🐪 for ج, but the letter is what counts.
  1. Open your school’s sign-in page

On your child’s device, open your school’s sign-in page in the web browser. It goes straight to the username.

Or open quranportal.io/learn, type the school code under What’s your school code? and press Next. Capitals don’t matter. The device remembers the school, so a brother or sister signing in later skips this step.

  2. Type the username

Type it under What’s your username? and press Next.

A phone asking What’s your school code?, with Ask your teacher if you don’t know it, a box with the school code typed in, and a Next button.
    The school code, at quranportal.io/learn…
A phone showing the school code alnoor with a Change link, the question What’s your username?, the username bilal.rahman typed in, and a Next button.
…then the username, which is where your school’s sign-in page starts.
  3. Tap the four letters

The page says Tap your four letters. Twelve Qaidah letters are laid out right to left. Each tap fills a dot, and Undo takes the last letter back. The fourth tap signs in straight away.

Two letters in. The dots fill from right to left, like the letters.

Your child’s pages follow the device’s language, in English, Arabic, French or Urdu. The letter pad is the same in every language.

What your child sees

Today’s practice

When there’s only one thing to practice, or the teacher sent a link to one lesson, the link opens that practice straight away. Otherwise your child’s page greets them with Assalamu alaikum and their name, and lists Today’s practice. Each card shows the assignment, about how long it takes, and Start, Keep going if they stopped part way, or Done today!. Tapping a card plays the recitation with the reciter and repetitions the teacher chose, and saves their practice for the teacher.

Tapping a card opens the listening player.

Work the teacher hasn’t graded yet stays on the list after its day, so an overdue assignment is still there to practice. If you have your own QuranPortal account, Listening practice on your dashboard shows the same cards for all your children.

Brothers and sisters on one tablet

Sign each child in on the same device, one after another. The device then opens on Who’s practicing? with a tile for each child, showing their name and first initial in their own color, so even a child who can’t read yet finds theirs. A device holds up to six children. Someone else? Sign in adds another.

A tablet showing the heading Who’s practicing?, two tiles with a colored initial for Amina Rahman and Bilal Rahman, and the links Someone else? Sign in and Grown-up? Sign in underneath.
Each child taps their own tile. No codes needed once they are signed in.

On a device where a child is signed in, opening quranportal.io goes straight to Who’s practicing?. To use your own account on it, press Grown-up? Sign in.

Wrong letters

If the letters are wrong, the pad says That didn’t work. Check your username and letters with a grown-up. After 5 wrong tries in a row, sign-in pauses for 15 minutes, and after 15 it locks until you unlock it. Devices already signed in keep working.

Locked after fifteen.

To help, open your child’s Practice center. Press Show next to Letter code to remind them, and Unlock if needed. Or press Show link and sign the device in that way.

Notifications you get

When your child signs in on a new device, or their sign-in locks after too many wrong letters, QuranPortal tells the people under Sign-in notices in the Practice center: you and any other parent, unless the school has changed who’s told. If a new device wasn’t you or your child, sign it out.

Two PRACTICE notifications from a parent’s Notifications page: Bilal’s sign-in is locked, Unlock it or make a new code in the Practice center; and Bilal signed in on a new device, Signed in with their letter code.

Lost devices and turning it off

A device stays signed in for 60 days after it was last used, and your child has no sign-out button to press by mistake. Devices in the Practice center lists every device signed in as your child:

  • Sign out signs out one device, such as a lost phone or a tablet you no longer use. If someone else may know the letters, press New code too.
  • The Home practice switch turns practice off for your child, and every device with it, until you turn it on again. The username, letter code and your child’s practice history stay.

Questions and answers

My child has their own QuranPortal account. Can they use home practice?

They don’t need the child sign-in. They sign in with their own account and practice from there, and their Practice center says so; the Home practice switch still turns their practice on and off. When their own account is connected, any device signed in with the child sign-in is signed out.

Should I turn home practice off or sign a device out?

Sign out one device when it is lost or no longer used; your child keeps practicing on the others. Turn the Home practice switch off to sign out every device and stop new sign-ins until you turn it on again. Neither loses your child’s practice history.

What happens to work my child didn’t finish yesterday?

It stays on Today’s practice until the teacher grades it, so your child can still practice it.

Why is Today’s practice empty?

It shows only work the teacher has turned listening on for and hasn’t graded yet. Ask the teacher to turn on listening for the assignment in your child’s Practice center.

Can brothers and sisters share one tablet?

Yes. Sign each child in on the tablet with their own link or letters. The tablet then shows Who’s practicing? with a tile for each child, up to six. Each child’s practice is saved to them, even when they are in different schools.

Why is my child’s username student1?

Usernames are made from the Latin letters in your child’s first and last name, such as bilal.rahman. Names written only in Arabic or Urdu script have none, so QuranPortal uses student1, student2 and so on. Press Change next to Username and pick something your child will remember.

What does QuranPortal record about my child?

Only their practice: which assignment they listened to, for how long and how many repetitions, saved for their teacher. Your child’s pages show only their name and their practice, aren’t indexed by search engines and send no analytics or tracking.
